│ ░▒▓█ Release Info │
└─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
* E-Business automation enhancements. PGP now provides
command-line options that remove the need for most
user prompting required in previous versions of the
product, reducing production times for E-Business
applications. Now, most operations can be done without
any user interaction. For example, in the past, a
series of questions would display when the user
needed to add a user ID to a key. Now, a single
command can perform this task without user
interaction:
pgp --key-edit Joe --add-userid Joseph --passhrase 123
* Descriptive option names. PGP commands are now
easier to remember, easier to understand and easier
to maintain. Command line options now have descriptive
names instead of cryptic letter sequences. For
example, to generate a key, you would type "pgp
--key-gen" instead of "pgp -kg". Or, to encrypt a file
you would type "pgp --encrypt --user Joe --overwrite
foo.txt" instead of "pgp +FORCE -e foo.txt Joe".
* E-Business scalability with the E-Business API. The
new Application Programming Interface in the PGP
E-Business Server provides high-performance execution
of PGP functionality using C function calls. The API
accepts the same command lines used by the
command-line PGP program, allowing quick, simple
integration of PGP into your applications. By avoiding
the overhead of spawning a shell process, scalability
for E-Business application can be dramatically
improved.
* Keeping large keyring files loaded for better
performance. A new utility, pgpcache, is provided to
pre-load keyring files for faster access to large
keyrings. This dramatically improves performance
when encrypting content individually for many
recipients.
* PGParchive and the free PGPreader. In addition to our
Self Decrypting Archive (SDA) support, we now also
support PGParchives. A PGParchive is a collection of
strongly encrypted and compressed files that can be
decrypted and decompressed into their original
form using the free PGPreader program. PGPreader is
available on all platforms supported by PGP E-Business
Server. PGPreader can also handle regular SDA files
that were previously usable only under Windows.
* More readable key views. The display for viewing keys
on your keyring has been greatly improved. Much more
detail is now displayed in a more readable format. The
--key-list, --key-detail, and --sig-detail options
now provide extensive information about your keys
including their revoked status, ADK keys, 64bit key
IDs, and fingerprints in word format.
* X.509 certificate request and retrieval. Support has
been added for automated requests for the generation
of X.509 certificates and for automated retrieval of
the X.509 certificate. The Certificate Authorities
that are supported are Net Tools PKI Server, VeriSign
OnSite, Entrust, iPlanet CMS, and Windows 2000.
* X.509 certificate generation. PGP can now create X.509
certificates by signing a PGP key with an X.509
certificate that is on the keyring. This allows users
to create their own standard X.509 certificates for
use in X.509 applications such as Web browsers.
* Smartcard support. Under Windows platforms, smartcards
can be used for many key management tasks. The
smartcard can be used for unattended public key
operations such as bulk decryption and digital
signing.
* Large file support. Previously, only files smaller
than 2GB were supported by PGP (except by SDAs).
Now, file sizes up to the practical limit of the
underlying operating system are supported.
* Enhanced keyserver support. New keyserver support has
been added to more easily search keyservers, add keys
to key servers, and delete/disable keys from
keyservers. Additionally, keys on the local keyring
can be easily updated from a keyserver based on
certain criteria like whether they have an ADK or
a designated revoker.
* Key reconstruction support. Key reconstruction data
can be safely stored on a keyserver in case the
private key is lost or the passphrase is forgotten.
By answering three of five answers that only the user
should know, PGP will recreate the lost key from the
keyserver's reconstruction data.
* Support for 3rd party LDAP directories. In addition
to full support of the PGP Keyserver, key retrieval
and storage can be done using regular 3rd party LDAP
directories. Also, key reconstruction data can be
stored on 3rd party LDAP directories.
* Photo ID support. Photo IDs allow a user to attach a
picture to a PGP key giving another form of
identification to a key. PGP E-Business Server now
allows you to attach a Photo ID to a key or to
retrieve a Photo ID from a key, enabling you to
view a Photo ID using an external JPEG viewer (viewer
not included).
* Standard Output and Standard Input. Support for
getting input from Standard Input (stdin) and sending
output to Standard Output (stdout) is now integrated
with the product and works like any normal Unix-style
filter.
* Wildcard support for filenames. Operations that
require files for input can now use wildcards.
Instead of only supporting a single file as input to
most operations, PGP now supports a list of files as
input. For example, the following will encrypt all
files whose names start with "foo" and end with ".txt
4;
in the current directory:
pgp --encrypt --user Joe --passphrase 123 foo*.txt
* Comprehensive built-in help. All primary PGP commands
are now self-documented by the built-in help
system. Running pgp --help displays a list of primary
help topics, and adding the --help option to any pgp
command provides a detailed usage summary of that
command.
